Snow Forecast with Twitter

February 5th, 2009 by Stephen Kinsella

With heavy snowfall across the UK and Ireland this week Twitter users have been using the micro blogging site to share their snow related experiences and to give weather updates for their area. A group called #uksnow has been gathering tweets that range from how many people have turned up to work to whether or not the snow is sticking in their area.

One Twitter user, Ben Marsh, has created a snowfall map using Google maps and tagged twitter messages to automatically display real time snowfall across the country. Users send a hash tweet along with the first few digits of their postcode and a number between 0 and 10 that indicates how heavy the snowfall is.
